What is required for a product to be Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade?

For a doTERRA product to be “Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade”, doTERRA starts with essential oils that are 100% pure, natural, aromatic compounds carefully extracted from plants. They do not contain fillers or artificial ingredients that would dilute their active qualities and are free of contaminants such as pesticides or other chemical residues. As important as it is to keep contaminants out of doTERRA oils, assuring the presence of their active compounds, at the right levels, is necessary to guarantee safety and effectiveness.
Many oils claim to be therapeutic grade, and some may be pure, but few are subjected to rigorous testing standards for chemical composition. At a minimum, doTERRA’s Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade essential oils are cross tested using mass spectrometry and gas chromatography to ensure both extract purity and composition potency of each batch.

doTERRA works closely with a global network of leading essential oil chemists and growers to select botanicals of the correct species, grown in the ideal environments and carefully harvested at the right time. The aromatic compounds of the plants are skillfully extracted by experienced distillers and subjected to chemical analysis to ensure purity and composition. As a result, doTERRA’s CPTG Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade essential oils represent the safest and most beneficial oils available in the world today.

Are doTERRA's essential oils 100% pure?

Although there are many good essential oils available to consumers, many products claiming to be essential oils are not pure aromatic extracts and often contain fillers and non-aromatic compounds. Furthermore, there are no current regulatory standards for the descriptive use of the “therapeutic grade” for products labeled as essential oils.

The CPTG Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade mark represents doTERRA’s own internal standards for sourcing and testing 100% pure aromatic botanical extracts using independent laboratory analysis. The doTERRA brand and registered CPTG mark represent doTERRA’s guarantee of 100% pure essential oil extracts that meet high standards for both purity and material composition and for accurate product labeling.

We harvest our plants and quickly and carefully distill the aromatic compounds of the plants. Other than testing for purity and composition, there is no other processing or manufacturing of the oils. They contain are 100% pure aromatic compounds. Nature did all the work; we just carefully remove the aromatic compounds and put them in the bottles. Pure and simple!

Are essential oils FDA approved?
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not “approve” dietary supplements or foods. They give approval for prescription and over the counter drugs. They do approve a list of ingredients called GRAS (generally recognized as safe) that are approved for use as food additives, preservatives, and cosmetics. Many essential oils do fall onto the GRAS list; however, doTERRA recognizes that their are many uses of essential oils outside of these parameters. Because there are no governmental bodies or organizations that approve or certify essential oil quality, doTERRA has chosen to follow a specific standard in producing essential oils through our Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade quality control process. This standard ensure that our essential oils are the top quality available on the market today and completely pure.

What differentiates doTERRA oils from competitive oils?
Because there are no accepted regulatory standards for governing quality of essential oils, it’s surprising how many oils labeled ‘therapeutic grade’ are devoid of therapeutic value due to impurities. Not all essential oils are alike. To be safe and effective, essential oils must be completely pure and free from any alterations that would reduce their therapeutic benefits. It is doTERRA’s stringent Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade (CPTG) standard which sets them apart from the competition and gives our oils superior quality and value.
How are doTERRA's essential oils extracted from the plant?
With the exception of citrus oils, doTERRA essential oils are extracted by steam distillation. Citrus essential oils are extracted by cold pressing. A few oils cannot be extracted by steam distillation or cold pressing due to their fragile nature, so they are extracted using a grain alcohol. All oils extracted by this method are labeled as absolutes.
Can I get a free sample of your products to try out before buy them?
Unfortunately, doTERRA corporate does not provide samples at this time. We recommend consulting one of our independent product consultants (IPC) in your area.

Is it safe for children to take doTERRA supplements?
We recommend that children begin by eating a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat dairy products, while also reducing the amount of sugar and processes foods they consume. We do have 2 supplements designed specifically for children, the IQmega and a2z chewable. An eight year old adolescent can safely take a half dose or less of the Lifelong Vitality products. If they are unable to swallow capsules, you can open the capsule and add the contents to food. However, both the the Alpha CRS+ and xEO Mega have very potent flavors that may be difficult to mask. Whenever you give a supplement to a young person, it is important to remember to start with the lowest dose per delivery system of the product (one capsule) and make sure they take it with food.
Is it safe for pregnant women to use the essential oils? What about nursing mothers?
There are no specific reasons or contraindications that would prevent pregnant or breastfeeding women from using our essential oils and we have not found any issues in this regard. We always recommend that pregnant and nursing women consult a health care professional before beginning use of any of our products.
Which products are vegan?

Most of our products are vegan. The following products are NOT considered vegan:, GX Assist, Slim & Sassy Trim Shakes, IQ mega, and the Hydrating Cream.*

The GX Assist uses a bovine gelatin. We use capsules containing an animal based ingredient because current technology for vegetable capsules had not allowed for oil-based products (they dissolve the capsules). We have found a new technology that will allow us to move away from these animal based capsules, but the transition will take some time.

IQ mega and xEO mega both contain fish oils. The Slim & Sassy Trim Shakes contain milk and egg proteins. The Hydrating Cream also contains milk proteins.

*There are many different definitions of veganism and some people may choose do not consume insects or their byproducts. The a2z chewable supplements contain honey and the lip balm contains beeswax.

Are doTERRA products manufactured near nuts or peanuts? What about soy?

No nuts!

The only product that contains soy is our Women?s Phytoestrogen Complex. It includes a potent soy extract standardized to 64% isoflavone content with a minimum of 50% genisteine, scientifically substantiated to provide health benefits in women.

Some people may ask about the Microplex VMz because the label states it contains soy. The growing medium for the Glycoprotein Matrix vitamins and minerals we use in the Microplex VMz is a soy product. After the growing process, the soy is removed and the vitamins and minerals are standardized for potency. If there is any soy remaining it would be in very, very micro amounts. Because a soy product is used in the process we are required to label it as containing soy.

Which products gluten free? Are they safe for use and consumption by those with Celiac disease, gluten intolerance, and gluten sensitivity?

All of doTERRA's essential oils, skin and hair care products, and supplements are free of gluten. Any ingredients that were of concern as potential sources of gluten have been fully evaluated and tested and were all found to be gluten free. Additionally, doTERRA only works with manufacturers who adhere to strict regulations ensuring that our products avoid cross-contamination. By adhering to the strictest standards, doTERRA products can safely be classified as gluten free. These products pose no health risk to those with gluten sensitivity, gluten intolerance, or Celiac disease.

The maltase enzyme used in doTERRA's TerraZyme supplement has been considered a potential gluten contributor because it is cultured in barley malt. While whole barley may be a gluten source, an enzyme derived from barley malt is not. When producing the maltase enzyme, barley is sprouted, allowing the grain to produce a high concentration of enzymes. The sprouting is then stopped and the sprouts are ground into flour and mixed with water. Enzymes produced in this process completely digest all starch and proteins found in the flour mixture (including gluten). This process results in the production of barley malt. The barley malt is then further refined and standardized to extract the maltase enzymes, which is included in the TerraZyme formula. Upon completion of these processes, all gluten has been removed and the resulting product gives a negative result in a gluten test.

Although doTERRA's skin and hair care products are free of gluten, some specific ingredients raised concern including: tocopheryl acetate, potassium lauryl wheat amino acids, oat kernel extract, brown rice syrup, and hydrolyzed oat proteins. Once again, all ingredients used to formulate doTERRA's personal care lines were found to be gluten free. It is important to remember that gluten intolerance is only a digestive issue. Gluten intolerance can cause skin irritation as a systemic side effect of the body's inability to digest gluten, but a gluten containing product contacting the skin will not cause a reaction. Gluten is too large of a molecule to be absorbed through the skin, and thus is unable to enter the gastrointestinal tract or cause an immune response by this route.
